BioinformaticsNowadays there is a rapid growth of the available information Life Sciences and this is mainly due to the enormous data flow produced by automated sequencing and functional analysis and the use of informatic tools for data production and management. Experimental techniques (X-ray, NMR spectroscopy, ...) are producing a lot of information about known protein sequences. The progress of biochemistry gave a spur to the sequencing of different organism genomes, including human one. These data, free in a large scale, form one of the main instruments used by research laboratories all over the World. Thanks to this large amount of data, to many experimental techniques and to homology search algorithms, today the identification of the structure of a protein or the function of a gene are challenges we can face. The need to store, manage and process these data gave rise to Bioinformatics, a discipline concerning the study, the development and the integration of informatic tools for scientific research in the field of biotechnologies.
Bioinformatics is usually intended as the use of informatic techniques for the solution or the management of problems concerning pharmaceutical activities, biotechnologies or, in general terms, Life Sciences (simulations, modelling, database managing, etc) by means of the automation of processes that scientists and biologists used to carry out by hand. In Bioinformatics different disciplines such as biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, electronics merge and it is an opportunity of growth and differentiation for the workers of this field.
In the last years Bioinformatics experienced a rapid evolution thanks to the growing computational and data management needs arising from life sciences. As a consequence, the availability of high performance computing resources is becoming a crucial aspect in research.
